[Class 69 (iii)] [See also Group I] Artificial fog for hiding vessels, buildings, &c. is produced by spraying into the air oleum (fuming vitriol) or other liquid capable of producing a durable fog by chemical reaction, the spraying being performed by means of apparatus in which the liquid is conveyed from a container to a pump which forces it, out of contact with air or gases, to a pulverizing nozzle. A pipe 2 and conduit 5 connect the barrel or other vented container 1 to the suction side of a pressure pump 7, the pressure side of which is connected to a long upwardly-directed pipe 9 provided with one or more interchangeable spray nozzles 10. A pipe connecting the suction and pressure sides of the pump is fitted with a safety valve. The pump 7 is driven from a source of power such as an electromotor 8, the rotary velocity of which is adjustable within wide limits so as to vary the pressure according to the desired extent of the fog. In a modification the liquid may flow by gravity into the pump. The apparatus may be mounted on motor vehicles, tram-cars, &c. and driven by gearing.
