457,586. Annular track wheels for vehicles. STEYR-DAIMLER-PUCH AKT.- GES., Steyr, Austria. April 20, 1936, No. 11307. Convention date, April 29, 1935. [Class 79 (i)] A combined rail-and-road wheel for vehicles comprises a pneumatic-tyred or otherwise resilient road wheel 1, 4 running on the interior of an annular rail wheel 5, the two wheels being releasably connected by means which permit relative radial and rotary movements but prevent relative axial movement, so that when running on rails the resilience of the road wheel is utilized and when the rail ring 5 is removed the wheel 4 can be used on the road. In the construction shown, the two wheels are connected by links 8 which are connected by universal joints 9, 10 respectively to a ring 6, which can rotate but move axially in the road wheel, and a ring 7 bolted at 12 to the rail ring 5. The joints 9, 10 may be ball-and-socket, indiarubber or other universal joints. The road wheel is mounted on an axle 2 and is provided with a drum 13 which, should the tyre 4 become deflated, runs on the ring 7 secured to the rail ring.
