Abstract
457,157. Mercury-vapour generators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5791. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1935. [Class 122 (iii)] [See also Group II] In a generator for mercury vapour or vapour from mercury containing sodium, lithium, or aluminium, the up-tubes and the down-tubes of a wall screen element are both exposed to radiant heat, and liquid-vapour, separating- means connect the ends of the tubes. The separators aid in inducing the circulation of fluid in the tubes. Pumping means are also provided. The up and down tubes 11, 12 are arranged in staggered formation. The upper ends are connected to headers 13, 14 including liquid-displacers, and the headers are connected to a separator 17. Similarly the lower ends of the tubes are connected to headers connected to a separator 21. The lower header and separator are connected by a pump 25. The separator, Fig. 3, has an inlet 16 which leads to a space 29 through tangential, tapered guide vanes 30. The fluid is thrown out with increasing velocity towards the wall 32. At the top the fluid is passed outwardly by other vanes 34 arranged in a spiral chamber. The liquid passes down pipes 36, 37 to the return pipe 15. The vapour passes to an upper chamber through a cylindrical member 41 and a third series of vanes 44 connecting a plate 45 to a second plate 40 mounted on pillars 39. This chamber is provided with an outer serrated wall. Liquid thrown down returns to the lower chamber. A part of the kinetic energy of the mixture in the separator is used to recirculate the liquid. In a modification, the headers corresponding to the headers 13, 14 form the two halves of a vertically-divided, single header. One of these is connected to the drum of a porcupine-type boiler directly, and the other through a strainer with the vapour space thereof.
