Abstract

575,335. Recovering of glycerine. HUTCHESON, W. W., and MASON, W. C. Jan. 21, 1944, No. 1200. [Class 32] A column for dealcoholising and dehydrating glycerine by distillation is divided into two sections by a substantially horizontal partition and the base of the upper section has a tubular heat exchanger heated by means of a steam operated thermo-compressor which creates a vacuum in the lower section of the column. The mixture of glycerine, alcohol and water is fed to the upper section of the column, which is preferably of the type described in Specifications 549,224 and 5b5,151, [both in Group XII], through the pipe B. Aqueous alcohol vapours pass from the top of the column to the reflux condenser D and liquid aqueous glycerine flows down to the tubular heat exchanger N which is heated by steam admitted through the pipe n<1> and thermo-compressor n'. The aqueous glycerine than flows through the pipe n<3> into the dehydrating section P which is maintained under reduced pressure by the thermo-compressor to which it is connected by means of pipes p' and p. The section P is equipped with a series of plates Q fitted with steam heated spiral coils R and dip pipes S and S', the coils and dip pipes being so arranged that the liquid flow is spirally inward and spirally outward respectively on alternate plates. Dehydrated glycerine is removed from the base of the column by means of the vacuum extraction pump T. Specification 449,216 also is referred to.
