Abstract
446,085. Mercury-vapour generators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 19, 1935, No. 35242. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1934. [Class 122 (iii)] In a mercury boiler, nozzles are provided for conducting mercury vapour into the liquid in the lower ends of the heating-tubes and a pump or auxiliary boiler is connected to the nozzles to effect a rapid circulation of the liquid. A mercury boiler of the wallscreen type is provided with heating-elements 10, a lower header or liquid-supply conduit 12, and an upper header or discharge conduit 13. A separator 14, disposed outside the furnace 11, is connected to the headers 12, 13, and is provided with an outlet 15. Mercury liquid is supplied by pipe 16 and pump 17 to the separator. Mercury vapour is forced into the lower ends of the tubes 10 through pipes or nozzles 20 and a pipe 18 supplied by a pump 19 driven by a variable-speed motor 21. In a modification, an auxiliary boiler under higher pressure supplies the vapour to effect the circulation. The main and auxiliary boilers may be housed in a single fire-box. The mercury may contain sodium or aluminium.
