455,917. Sharpening machine-cutters. LEGG, Ltd., R., and SCHREIBER, P. Q. R., Eagle Wharf Road, Hoxton, London. March 27, 1935, No. 9578. [Class 60] [See also Group I] The revolving knives 1 of a machine suitable for cutting tobacco are ground during operation by means arranged so that the plane of grinding XX is displaced from the plane of cut YY, the knife holders being given angular displacements to cause the knife edges to move from one plane to the other in order that the ground face 1<1> of the knives may make a clearance angle with the plane of cut. In the apparatus shown the knives 1 are held by clamping plates 14 to arms 12 pivotally mounted on pins 9 secured to a boss 5 on the rotating knife shaft 2. Cam arms 13, forming with the arms 12 double levers, carry rollers 17 engaging an annular cam track 18 so shaped that during rotation the arms 12 are oscillated on the pins 9 to bring the cutting edges of the knives into the plane YY for cutting and the plane XX for grinding, where they contact with a cup wheel 20. Springs 22 engage third lever arms 23 to maintain the rollers in contact with the cam. Specification 437,272 is referred to.
