Cigarette-making machines. - Mechanism for cutting into lengths an axially - moving cigarette or other rod comprises a shaft 1, Fig. 1, and one or more blades 35 adapted to revolve thereabout, the blades being displaced. parallel to the moving rod during revolution. As shown in Fig. 1, two segmental or other blades 35 are carried in clamps 36 upon links 26. These links are pivotally car. ried at the extremities of two pairs of links 23, 24, which are adapted to swing about parallel pivots 21, 22 upon and at right angles to the shaft 1. The links of each pair 23, 24 are disposed one on each side of the shaft 1 and are connected by bridge-pieces 27, 28. The lateral displacement of the blades 35 is effected by a stub shaft 31 inclined to the shaft 1 and carrying a yoke piece 30 engaged by pivot pins 29 mounted upon the bridge-pieces 28. The inclination of the shaft 31 to the shaft 1 is variable. The blades 35 co-operate with a ledger plate which may comprise a disc 16 driven from the shaft 1 through gearing 5, &, 9, 10, 13 and 14 and a shaft 15. The disc 16 is formed with a peripheral groove 16<a> and with radial slots 17 adapted to receive the knives. The blades 35, Fig. 1, may be replaced by rotating disc or segmental knives 35<1>, Fig. 4, the shafts- 35" of which are carried in bearings in the links 26. Rotation of the shafts 35<11> may be effectedby a frictional drive 39, 40 from a stationary wheel 38 upon the bearings 32 of the shaft 31, or by universal shafts driven by planet pinions revolving around a fixed sun pinion on the bearings 32. The shaft 31, Fig. 1, and the yoke-piece 30 may be replaced by a swash-plate comprising a stationary disc inclined to the shaft 1 and engaged by rollers on the links 23, or by a fixed cam track engaged by rollers on the links 26. In another modification, a point in the arms 23 may be connected by a universal shaft with a point eccentric to the shaft 1. In the modification indicated in Fig. 8, the opposite ends of the links 24 are pivoted independently at points 50 displaced from the axis of the shaft 1. In the constructions described, two knives or a single knife counterbalanced bv a weight may be employed. The set of blades shown in Fig. 1 may also be duplicated.
