Abstract
455,455. Soldering-tools. McCARTHY, G. R., 76, Kent Terrace, Wellington, New Zealand. Aug. 12, 1935, No. 22703. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1934. [Class 83 (iv)] In a portable electric soldering or like apparatus of the kind comprising a hand tool with a carbon bit connected to one terminal of a low voltage supply, the other terminal of which is connected to the work so that the circuit is completed on application of the bit to the work, the bit is adjustably mounted in a socket arranged at an angle to the tool stem other than a right angle. The tool is provided with an insulated handle 1 through which passes a headed conductor rod 5 to which the inclined clamp socket 9 for a carbon bit 11 is secured. One terminal of a low voltage circuit which may be supplied from a transformer secondary is connected to a terminal 7 on the rod 5 and the other carries a clip 17 for securing it to the work or to the solder stick 20. In a modification, the socket 9 may be secured to the handle by a sleeve through which one of the conductors may be led and connected direct to the socket. The bit may be reversed in the socket and may be completely enclosed therein when not in use. It is made from carbon previously subjected to intense heat until it becomes dull red so as to clean it and prevent marking of the work. Graphite or discarded battery carbons may be used. The transformer and the part of the secondary circuit which is connected directly to the work are earthed.
