[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] An electric soldering-iron in which a pointed carbon rod 11 is arranged behind a copper bit 24, is provided with a carbon holder 3 slidable in bearings 4, 5 in a plastic moulding forming a pistol-type handle 1. The forward end of the tube 3 is tapered to receive a split collet 7, operated by a knob 8 at the rear end of the tube 3 through the medium of a tube 9 threaded over the collet, to secure the rod 11 in any desired position. A toothed rack 12 carrying collars 12a surrounding the tube 3 is engaged by a toothed segment 13 having a trigger 15 whereby the tube 3 may be moved forward through the movement of spring 17. A lighter retracting spring 18 is provided. The segment 13 may be locked by a releasable pawl 19. The bit 24, made of sheet copper, carries a rod 23 which is inserted into the socket 22 and locked by a screw 25. The bit is heated by the glowing point of the carbon 11, and it may carry side wings 26, 27 to prevent dazzle. Alternative bits, Figs. 4a, 4b may have the part 28 at other angles, or the bit may be removed and the carbon rod used for spot soldering, the work being in the circuit. Current may be supplied at low voltage from a transformer 36. In alternatives, two carbons may be employed, or a metal block may be interposed between carbon and bit. The second Provisional Specification refers also to the use of a flat-ended electrode to avoid glow, and to details of a modification in which two carbon electrodes are used.
