Abstract
455,294. Sliding windows ; fastenings. CLARKE, A. E., 3, Stevenson Road, Ipswich. April 16, 1935, No. 11788. [Class 44] [See also Group X] A sliding window, particularly of the halfdrop type for vehicles, is balanced by being supported on the upper ends of springs 10 housed in channels 12 shown as adjacent to the guide channels 2 in which the frameless window 1 slides. The outer edges 3, 4 of these guide channels are bent inwards to hold packing strips 5, 6 which grip the window 1, and the bottom of each channel has a strengthening liner 8 with perforations or recesses engaged by bolts 36 which retain the window in adjusted position. The channels 12 are closed by angle-irons 14 which are removable to allow replacement &c. of springs 10. The window 1 is supported by being secured at its upper edge to a cross-bar 25, which is of tubular form to house the retaining bolts and operating mechanism. The bar has lugs 15, 16 which rest on rods 19 surrounded by the springs 10 and having collars 17 resting in the upper ends of the springs. The lower fixed pane has a channel member 57, Fig. 2, gripping its upper edge, one limb of the channel being bent over as at 55 so that its free edge holds a resilient strip 59 which bears against the sliding pane 1 to exclude water &c. The window-holding means comprises bolts 36, the inner ends of which are adjustably connected by nuts 33<1>, 34<1> to members 33, 34 recessed to hold springs 41, 42 urging the bolts to shot position, and a cam 43 which can be rotated by a handle 48 to retract the bolts. The cam is retained by a removable segmental cover 50 with a finger-piece 62 gripped simultaneously with handle 48 to operate the bolts and adjust the window 1.
