455,089. Metal - heating furnaces. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., LOBLEY, A. G., and ROBIETTE, A. G. E., Tyburn Road, Erdington, Birmingham. April 9, 1935, No. 10909. [Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace for annealing metals in a protective atmosphere provided with a fan for circulating the atmosphere, during the heating and cooling periods, through the charge and over heating and cooling elements respectively, the charge container c, on which are mounted electric heating elements e, the fan d and water or like cooling tubes m are all enclosed in a lift-up bell b which is formed with an internal flange b2 adapted to engage with a compressible ring g so as to isolate, during the heating period, the fan d and gas-circulating space f from the cooling chamber i. The ring g is carried on a partition h which is formed with apertures h<1> adapted to be opened and closed by externally-operated dampers h<2>, h<3>, and is of such dimensions as to provide an annular space through which the atmosphere gas may pass when the seal b<2>, g is broken by raising the bell b. In the form shown, the latter has an inclined lower edge resting on an inclined roller track o ; by turning the bell about its vertical axis it is raised a distance sufficient to break the internal seal. b<2>, g but not the external one n.
