Abstract

878,500. Bell-type furnaces. WILSON, L. Dec. 13, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 22626/60. Divided out of 878,497. Class 51 (2). A bell-type annealing furnace for opened coils comprises a support for the coil, a blower, and a baffle for directing all the circulating atmosphere between the laps of the coil. As shown, the furnace has a base structure D, a plenum chamber E, an inner cover F, and a furnace bell G. Protective gas within the furnace is circulated by blower fan 42 and flows between vanes 50, being deflected by diverting plate 48 into the space between outer wall 54 of plenum chamber E and outer wall 60 of the inner cover. Reactant tubes 68 heat wall 60 and the heated gas is discharged into space 61 at the top of coil C<SP>1</SP>. Gas flow down the centre of the coil is prevented by baffle plate 57 and so the gas flows down between the laps of the coil to plenum chamber E where it is deflected by plates 58 back to fan 42 for recirculation. Surrounding fan 42, the charge support and diffuser has an outer cylindrical wall 47 and a conical gas diverting wall 48. Streamlined diffusing vanes 50 extend from close to fan 42 to inclined wall 48. Specification 878,499 also is referred to.
