[Class 25] [Also in Group XII] To prevent emission of glare and flames from a cupola, a chamber 11, Fig. 2, having a cross sectional area greater than that of the cupola 10 is arranged above the cupola and surmounted by a hood 15, 16, 19 supported by members 14 on a conical extension 13 of the chamber. The lower part of the hood is surrounded by a skirt 17, also attached to the extension 13. Water or other liquid is delivered on to the top of the hood and passes down the portion 15 between bar 21 or in channels and through an annular space formed between the overlapping portions 15, 19 of the hood to provide a liquid curtain through which the gases &c. from the cupola pass before escaping to the atmosphere. Instead of liquid a gas such as carbon dioxide may be employed to form the curtain. The gases may be cooled in the chamber 11 by air which may enter through an annular space provided between the chamber and the cupola. The water or liquid falls into a trough 24 and then flows down the wall of the chamber 11, which may be provided externally with shield plates 218 to prevent the water being blown off the wall of the chamber, by the wind. The water finally falls into a trough 26 provided with a drain pipe. A baffle 22 serves to direct the gases from the cupola into the outlet passage between the extension 13 and, the hood. Fig. 5 shows a modification applied to a cupola of the kind described in Specification 358,267, [Group XII]. In this case the skirt 38 is supported by a water trough 40.
