Abstract

1307636 Fluid heating store RAYPAK Inc 28 July 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 36442/70 Heading F4W A fluid heating appliance for outdoor use comprises a combustion chamber 10 with a burner 16 below it spaced from an outer jacket 34 and a top 4. A sleeve 66 surmounts a tank of horizontal water tubes 31 at the top of the combustion chamber. A collar 72, which may comprise spaced plates or insulation is spaced from the top 4 to leave exhaust gas outlets 78. The top of the outer casing 34 is bent inwardly at 70 to leave a space 5 between the collar 72 and the main part of the casing. Forward opening 42, 58 are arranged at two levels in the sides of the casing 34. A baffle 76 extends from the sleeve 66 to terminate just above the inwardly bent part 70 of the casing 34. The burner is enclosed by a skirt spaced from the outer jacket 34. In operation, air enters through the louvred opening 42, 58 and top inlet 5, and air for combustion reaches the burner through ouvred openings in the skirt. The remaining air flows upwardly in the space between the jacket and combustion chamber and between the spaced plates of the collar 72 to mingle with the exhaust gases flowing over the top of the sleeve 66 at 68 to exit from the gap 78 surrounding the top 4. In conditions of moderate or high wind Fig. 5 the arrangement of the inlet 5 and the spaced louvred openings 58, 42 prevents excessive draught, and the effect of the flow through the opening 5 over the baffle 76 and between the plates of the collar 72 induces a satisfactory exhaust gas flow. A divider in the space above the sleeve 66, a rim at the bottom of the top 4 and baffles in the exhaust gas outlet 78 prevent driving rain from reaching the combustion chamber. In a modification, the inwardly sloping upper part of the outer casing has a vertical extension spaced from the collars 72, and there is no baffle extending from the sleeve 66. The collar may be supported in hollow brackets through which cooling air flows to a central stack in the cover, the exhaust gases flowing on either side of the brackets to the outlet.
