Abstract

535,133. Spark arresters. STANTON IRONWORKS CO., Ltd., and WILSON, P. H. Sept. 23, 1939, No. 26523. [Class 25] [Also in Group XII] The emission of glare and sparks from cupola and like furnaces is prevented by causing the gases from a cupola 1 having a stack 3 to pass through sprays of water from nozzles 14 arranged beneath a frusto-conical hood 2. The hood may be cooled by water supplied by a pipe 8 to a conical vessel 5 from which it is discharged through an overflow pipe 9 to the outer surface of the hood which is provided with ribs 11 forming weirs. The water flows from the hood through a pipe 12 into a trough 16 having a discharge pipe 15. The sprays from the nozzles 14 are directed against the vessel 5 and any water striking the under side of the hood flow down into the trough 16.
