[Class 5.1 (ii).] In a rotary furnace for calcining lime, dolomite, cement, &c., or for the treatment of ores, a drying zone a fitted with sheet metal lifter blades b is followed by a heating zone d divided up into a number of parallel channels or tubes e. In this zone the temperature of the heating gases is reduced to such a degree that the lifter blades in the drying zone will not be adversely affected by the gases. The high temperature zone h is preferably of greater diameter than the remainder of the furnace. The zone d may consist of tubes fitted within the main shell, as shown, or the furnace at this zone may be of cellular construction.
