[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XVIII] Change-speed gearing for price-changing purposes in prepayment meters comprises driving and driven shafts 3 and 8 carrying paired gears 5 and 9, 6 and 10, and 7 and 11, a series of idler pinions 20, 21 and 22 being adapted to be alternatively brought into mesh with a respective pair of gears on the shafts 3 and 8 by rotation of a carrier 13, in which the idlers are journalled, about an axis 23 which lies in the continuation of the plane of the shafts 3 and 8. Each pair of gears with its respective idler pinion provides a gear train having a different transmission ratio between the shafts 3 and 8. The carrier 13 is held in its alternative positions by engagement of a spring-pressed bush 24, carried by a screw 26 on a main frame plate 2, with one of a series of apertures 30 in an arcuate slot in the carrier 13. A pointer 27 working over a scale on a second main frame plate 1 indicates the price per unit corresponding to the setting of the carrier 13. In a modified construction of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the shafts 3 and 4 each carry a single gear lying in different planes, the carrier 13 carrying a number of idler shafts each with a pair of idler wheels so that any one pair of idler wheels can be brought into mesh each with the gear on one of the shafts 3 and 8. In a modified construction of Fig. 6, a gear 73 on the shaft 3 meshes with three gears 61, 63 and 65 journalled in the fixed frame plates, and a gear 74 on the shaft 8 meshes with toothed wheels secured to three shafts 70, 71 72 each carrying a further gear 62, 64 and 66. Journalled in the carrier 13 is a single broad idler pinion 60, which, by adjustment of the carrier, can connect either the gears 61 and 62, 63 and 64, or 65 and 66, thus providing three different transmission ratios between the shafts 3 and 8.
