[Class 103 (i)] [See also Group XXIX] A manually - controlled vacuum - operated power device for the brakes or other parts of automobiles or the like comprises a main diaphragm 3 attached to the brake rod 8 and an auxiliary diaphragm 18 supporting a valve 22 controlling the suction to the main diaphragm. The main diaphragm and the control valve diaphragm are interconnected by a floating lever 25 between parallel rods 9 and 23 to which is also attached a pedal rod 26 which, on actuation to apply the brakes, lifts the diaphragm 18 and the valve 22 to establish communication between the main diaphragm chamber a and a suction passage 14 leading, for example, to the engine so that the suction on the main diaphragm assists the manual effort. The valve 22 serves also to break the vacuum when the operating pedal is released.
