Abstract

Effects such as embossing, glazing, schreinering and beetling on cellulosic fabrics of natural or artificial origin are rendered resistant to laundering, hot damp pressing, &c. by impregnating the fabric before embossing &c. with formaldehyde and an acid-reacting catalyst and after embossing &c., heating the materials to 110 DEG C. or above, for example, to 120--160 DEG C. Before the embossing &c. operation, the impregnated material may be dried. As an alternative, the formaldehyde &c. may be applied to the yarn, the final heating being carried out after the yarn has been woven to a fabric. Starch, dextrine, glue, china clay or other filler may be added to the formaldehyde solution. Specifications 25647/06, [Class 2], 234,618, [Class 2 (ii)], and 414,576 are referred to.
