Abstract

In the manufacture of a safety glass having a cellulose acetate plastic interlayer, the surfaces of the glass to be united are coated first with gelatine and then with a solution of a cellulose acetate obtained by treating with acid an acetone soluble secondary cellulose acetate. In an example, a cellulose acetate powder having an acetyl content of 35,5 per cent is boiled in a solution containing hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid until the acetyl content has fallen to 34--34,5 per cent. The two sheets of glass are coated with gelatine, dried and coated with an aqueous acetone solution of the prepared cellulose acetate. After drying in a chamber having a humidity of about 33 per cent, the glass sheets are combined in a bath comprising methyl cyclohexanols with an interlayer of cellulose acetate plastic containing dimethyl phthalate as plasticizer. The assembly is then removed and pressed. In a second example, the cellulose acetate powder has an acetyl content of 39 per cent before and 38 per cent after treatment with the acid. The solvent used is an aqueous wood distillation product. Specifications 328,919, 332,551, [both in Class 20 (iii)], and 389,106, [Group VIII], are referred to.
