Abstract
Sheets obtained by extruding plastic material such as cellulose derivative compositions are passed through brine, the temperature of which is relatively low at the point where the sheet is introduced, and progressively increases along the path of travel of the sheet as the solvent content decreases, but is not allowed to rise sufficiently to cause distortion. The seasoning of the sheet is continued further in air. There may be used a plurality of baths of progressively increasing temperature. The brine treatment may be continued until the greater part of the solvent has been removed leaving only about 3--5 per cent of volatile constituents comprising solvent and water. The initial temperature may be below 15 DEG C. The maximum temperature is varied according to the composition of the plastic material. It is preferably at least 45 DEG C. and may be as high as 70 DEG C. The brine baths may consist of sodium chloride solution of about 20 per cent strength. Fresh brine may be added to the baths and used brine removed so as to maintain the solvent content in the bath at 1--3 per cent. In an example, a plastic dough comprising cellulose nitrate, camphor, ethyl alcohol and acetone is extruded into cold brine. The sheet travels through the bath and then successively through a large number of baths maintained at progressively higher temperatures, the final temperature applied to the sheet after six hours being 70 DEG C. The sheet is then seasoned for 2 hours in warm circulating air, and it may then be used for safety glass. Other compositions specified are, cellulose acetate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, alcohol, and acetone, and cellulose acetate, dimethyl phthalate, ethyl alcohol, and methyl ethyl ketone. Cellulose ether plastic compositions may also be used. Specification 393,957 is referred to.
