Abstract

Solid ethylene polymer (which may contain a small amount of oxygen) is shaped at a temperature above its softening temperature, i.e. above about 110 DEG C., solidified by cooling and rolled or cut into one or more thin strips or sheets. The polymer, which may be prepared according to the process described in Specification 471,590, may be shaped by extrusion, or by passing it through a pair of rollers, of which one is kept at a temperature above the softening temperature and the other is kept cold. According to another method, the polymer is applied as a powder or as a solution to the surface of a solid or a heavy liquid, e.g. mercury, and is heated to a temperature above the softening temperature, where necessary after evaporation of the solvent, so as to produce a continuous film. The polymer employed preferably has a molecular weight of 4000 or 6000 or more. The strength of the films may be increased by subjecting them to cold rolling, e.g. so as to reduce the thickness of the material to about one-fifth. According to the Provisional Specification, the properties of the films may be modified by incorporating polystyrenes.
