Abstract

Self-supporting films less than 0,0025 mm. thick consisting of organic thermoplastic polymeric materials are produced by depositing on a clean surface a thin layer of a colloidal dispersion of the material in a liquid having a boiling point sufficiently low to permit its removal from the surface at a temperature below the fusing temperature of the material and being such that no residue is left after evaporation which will modify the material, removing the liquid from the layer of the dispersion by evaporation, heating the residual material to a temperature within the range 600 DEG to 750 DEG F. to fuse the material into a continuous layer, subjecting the layer to pressure while it is hot to compress it into a non-porous state and a thickness of less than 0,0025 mm., and detaching the layer from the surface. The polymeric materials are preferably the halogenated polyethylenes, such as polytetrafluoroethylene. In an example, a stainless steel endless travelling belt, after being freed from dirt, oxide and oil, thereafter passed through a 2% aqueous solution of phosphoric acid at about 100 DEG F., washed with water and a neutralizing solution, is passed through a 40% aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene containing a minor proportion of acetone, the dispersion being maintained at 150 DEG F. and the belt travelling through the dispersion at a rate such that a film 0,0001 inch in thickness is deposited on the belt. The wet belt is then passed first through a drying oven maintained at about 150 DEG F. and then through a finishing oven maintained at about 680 DEG F. The porous film thereby formed on the belt is converted to a non-porous form by passing the coated belt while still at about 680 DEG F. through the nip of a pair of pressure rollers which compress the film to a thickness about one-half of that when it is in the fused state and the film is then cooled, stripped from the belt and wound on a storage roll. Laminates may be produced by leaving the film adhering to a flexible supporting surface (see Group VIII). Films produced in the prescribed manner may be used for the manufacture of electrical capacitors (see Group XXXVI). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 850,885.
