Abstract
305,601. Imray, O. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 5, 1927. Cellulose formates; cellulose acetates; preparatory treatment of cellulose.-Cellulose to be used in the manufacture of cellulose acetates is subjected to a preliminary treatment with formic acid of at least 80 per cent strength until it contains not less than 4 per cent and not more than 10 per cent of formic acid chemically combined. Cotton or other cellulosic material free from lignin is suitable as the initial material and the treatment is preferably conducted in such a manner that the cellulose is treated continuously with fresh formic acid, for example by percolation, until it has attained the specified content of combined formic acid after which the product is washed, dried, and acetylated in known manner. Specification 263,128 and French Specification 565,654 are referred to.
