Abstract

451,755. Envelopes. VOGEL, M., 315, Mainzerlandstrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Jan. 21, 1936, No. 1892. [Class 146 (ii)] In an envelope of the kind provided with self-sealing adhesive the closure flap has an extension which is free from adhesive and arranged, during the storing of the envelope, to cover or to lie between the adhesive strips on the back and the closure flap, so that the strips cannot contact and seal the envelope prematurely. As shown, the closing flap b, served with dry adhesive d, is provided with an extension h<1> foldable along a line e of perforations to cover the adhesive d and the dry adhesive f on the back of the envelope when the envelope is to be packed. To seal the envelope, the flap b is folded about the line g to bring the two adhesive surfaces into contact, and the extension h<1> is then separated from the flap along the perforated line e. In a modification, the adhesive on the back of the envelope is in two separated bands extending across the envelope the top band being of smaller width than the bottom band and foldable thereover along an intermediate fold-line, and adhered thereto prior to the folding and sealing of the closing flap. This first folding brings the upper part of the front of the envelope over the mouth of the pocket to provide an initial closure. The adhesive on the closing flap is then pressed into contact with the remaining portion of the adhesive on the back of the envelope to complete the closure. The extension of the closing flap is substantially longer than in the previous construction, for example it may cover the back of the envelope, and can be used for notes, or as a receipt where the envelope is used as a wages' envelope. In a further modification, the extension of the closing flap is short, and, when folded about a line of perforations as before, only covers the adhesive on the closing flap, and the closing flap is then folded on to the back of the envelope, the folded extension separating the two adhesive surfaces.
