[Class 146 (ii).] In an envelope of the kind provided with an opening or tearing member gummed or otherwise secured to the closure flap in such a manner that a short length of the tearing member projects beyond the edge of the flap but does not extend beyond the edge of the envelope, the closure flap 6 at a position adjacent the crease or folded-over portion is of a length slightly less than the length of the envelope. The closure flap 6 may be shortened at one or both ends so that the tearing member may be grasped. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the tearing member is a tape 8 of fabric or strong paper and the severing takes place both at the crease 9 of the closure flap 6 and also at the position 10, with the result that the front edge of the envelope extends slightly beyond the remaining or fixed portion of the closure flap, thereby providing an extension lip facilitating separation of the edges adjacent the severed or torn portion. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the tearing member is a string 7 and the folded side flap is provided with an extension lip 12 thereby ensuring that the upper edge of the flap at this position extends level with the crease to a position in which it iscovered by the closure flap 6 ; in a modification this extension lip is omitted. In the case of large envelopes the tearing member may extend down the side of the envelope.
