Abstract

924,267. Paper bags; opening devices. UNION BAG-CAMP, PAPER CORPORATION. Nov. 30, 1959 [Dec. 1, 1958], No. 40542/59. Class 94(2). A cross-bottom paper bag comprises a tear tape pasted to a reinforcing strip which is not integrally formed with the bag and which is pasted into the bottom of the bag, the tear tape projecting laterally of the bag. As shown in Fig. 2, which is a view of the valve end of the bag with the end closure flaps 11, 12 open, the tear tape reinforcing strip 15 is pasted to the flap 11 and the opposite edges of the flaps are folded inwards to form flaps 13, 14, the flap 13 being designed to serve as a valve flap. The reinforcing strip 15 has a length of filament tape, cord or wire 16 attached to it and may have a tab 17 at one end, and its edges may be folded ones to reinforce and position it. The flaps 11, 12 may be perforated along the lines 19, 20 so that, after folding, the line of perforations will be above the tape 16. The tab 17 projects outside the valve, and when the tab is pulled the tape tears through the paper, Fig. 7, and opens the end of the bag about half way along, allowing the valve flap to be pulled out to form a pouring spout. The bag may be formed from one or more plies of paper, that illustrated being composed of four plies.
