Abstract

451,363. Lubricating internalcombustion engines. CROSS, R. C., 33, Midford Road, Odd Down, Bath. Feb. 25, 1935, No. 5990. [Class 12 (iii)] [See also Group XXIX] In means for supplying lubricant to internalcombustion engines in quantities proportional to the throttle opening, a valve member 10 is slidably carried in a rod 7 and is urged by a spring 11 towards a seating formed by the conical bore of a casing 1. The rod 7 passes through a stuffing-box at one end of the casing 1 the other end of the latter being connected to an oil supply pipe 3 delivering oil to a pipe 4 leading to the engine. Some of the oil supplied by the pipe 3 byepasses the valve 10 and is led by a pipe 16 back to the oil sump. The outer end of the rod 7 is pivoted to a lever connected to a part of the engine which moves in accordance with the throttle opening. When the throttle is widely open the parts take up the position shown in full lines, the spring 11 being compressed so that only a little of the oil is byepassed. As the throttle closes the parts move towards the dotted line position so that more of the lubricant is byepassed. The byepass pipe 16 may be formed to offer considerable frictional resistance to the oil when the latter is cold and viscous, or manual means may be provided to keep the oil pressure at the correct value until the engine has warmed up. The invention may be applied to the lubrication of the rotary valves such as those fitted with oil scrapers as described in Specification 423,474.
