Abstract

450,298. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 30, 1935, No. 35977. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1934. [Class 38 (v)] A thermal overload relay comprises a bimetallic or other thermal element 16 arranged in a slot in an iron core 13 which is surrounded by a cylindrical conductor 17 which may be heated by currents induced from a primary winding 33. The bimetallic strip 16 when heated moves upwards a plunger 23 to engage a spring 27 and move a contact 25 away from an adjustable fixed contact 24. The core and bimetallic strip are heat insulated by means of an insulating cylinder 21 and insulating members 10, 19. The whole device is adapted to be immersed in oil, some of which enters round the loosely fitting plunger 23 while air escapes round the loosely fitting parts 10, 19, 21 which form otherwise a closed container. The relatively small amount of oil in this container and its thermal insulation allows the thermal element to heat up quickly.
