[Classes 18, 66, and 94 (ii)] A carton for liquids &c. is formed from an uncut rectangular blank creased as shown in Fig. 1, the blank being first formed into an open-ended prism of which an end is then closed by turning inwardly about crease 6 parts b<1>, d<1>, causing them to overlap, and simultaneously folding or pleating parts a<1>, c<1> first inwardly along diagonals 10, then outwardly along diagonals 12 to form triangular portions 18, 18<1>, Fig. 4, which are turned inwardly to lie on the part d<1>. The folding is conveniently performed with the blank supported on a mandrel which comprises a thin outer shell 20, Fig. 7, slidable with respect to a block 21, so that after the closing of the end the block can be retracted within the shell a distance equal to that between lines 6 and 15, Fig. 1, when, the shell being set level with line 15, Fig. 4, pressure can be applied by means of a base-collapsing mandrel of smaller sectional area than block 21 to effect the recessing of the end. Alternatively a one-piece mandrel may be employed for the recessing operation, the mandrel being formed with an opening through which compressed air can be admitted to form a cushion between the closed end and the end of the retracted mandrel, disposed in the position occupied by the block 21 in Fig. 7.
