[Classes 18 and 94 (ii).] In a carton or similar receptacle in which an end portion is pleated and folded in to form an end wall, opposing folds, such as b<1>, b<2>, Figs. 3 and 4, measured across the common abutting centre f, are made slightly longer than the distance y across the centre between the corresponding edges b<3>, b<4> of the carton so that the abutting folds form a slightly conical or pyramidal wall which, when pushed inwards beyond its flat state, resists any opening of the end wall of the carton ; the end may be glued or paraffined. The pleats h instead of running diagonally across the end of the carton as shown may be arranged to diverge from the diagonals and the pleats instead of being folded down may be left standing up to form ribs which, after the end wall has been pushed in, may be arranged to be flush with the outer edges of the carton. The cross section of the carton may be polygonal or circular and may be of tapered form and the pleats may be of different lengths. The end of the carton may be formed in the device shown in Fig. 10 in which the flaps m, for forming the pleats, are hinged on rightangled bends l<1> of members l mounted in vertical sockets k on a frame i surrounding the carton. Springs n tend to maintain the bends l<1> tangential to the frame and by moving down the flaps m by the handles o the pleats are formed and subsequently folded down by moving the turned-down flaps in the sockets k.
