Abstract

449,285. Change - speed gearing. HOFER, A., Schlossberg, and MEYER, C., Obere Bahnhofstrasse, both in Rapperswil, St. Gallen, Switzerland. Oct. 1, 1935, No. 27113. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing for pedal-drive cycles comprises toothed gears 5, Fig. 1, fast on the pedal shaft 2 meshing with gears 7 loose on a hollow countershaft 8 which drives back through a pair 9, 10 to a sleeve 10<1> carrying the usual sprocket 11. The loose gears 7 are coupled selectively to the countershaft 8 by a clutch key 12 pivoted upon a carriage 15 axially adjustable in the bore 25 of the countershaft. The key 12 is kept by a spring 20 thrust outwards through a slot 26 in the shaft 8 so as to engage alternatively with key slots 31 at the loose wheel centres. The slots 31 of the different wheels 7 are separated by spring rings 18 of circular section. The ends of the gear teeth are inclined away from one another at 40 for smoothness of running. The key 12 is held in gear position by being dovetailed at 28, 29, Fig. 4. The carriage 15 is moved to change the speed from the cycle steering column, through a cable or linkage.
