597,989. Change-speed gear. LOCKETT, J. Aug. 25, 1945, No. 21874. [Class 80(ii)] A three speed countershaft gear for a pedal cycle is mounted in a casing forming the bottom bracket. The crankshaft 10 carrying pedal cranks 11 is carried in bearings in the casing 6 which is provided with lugs 6b for the reception of the frame tubes. On one end of shaft 10 is freely mounted a sleeve 13b having gear 13 and dogs 13a at one end and chainwheel 19 at the other. A Bowden-wire controlled sliding-sleeve 12, splined to shaft 10, has gears 12a, 12b and dogs 12c formed integral. The gears 13, 12b, 12a mesh with layshaft gears 20a, 20b, 20c to provide three speeds in known manner.
