Abstract
Massive bodies having a density greater than that of lead, particularly for use as shields against penetrating radiation, are made by heating a mixture of fine tungsten powder and the fine powder of another metal which may be copper or nickel to a temperature not exceeding 1500 DEG C. A binder such as a solution of wax in benzene may be used, such binder being removed during the heating process. Part of the shaping may be effected before the heating is completed. Compositions consisting of tungsten with (1) 5 per cent of copper, (2) 5 per cent of nickel, and (3) 5 per cent of copper and 5 per cent of nickel, are described. Specifications 17438/08, [Class 82], and 5150/13, [Class 82 (i)], are referred to.
