[Class 37] A protective resistor of the kind wherein so long as the voltage applied remains within predetermined limits it has a very high resistivity but otherwise acquires a permanent low resistivity, is constituted by depositing, preferably by electrolysis, a layer of metal on a conducting support not composed of the same metal as the layer, the layer metal being then formed into a compound. The layer may be copper, the support nickel and the compound an oxide.
