Abstract
586,682. Condensers. SPORING, P. A., and TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO., Ltd. May 8, 1944, No. 8682. [Class 37] A tubular container 7 for an electric condenser 1 or other apparatus is closed at one or both ends by spinning over the edge 8 to grip a resilient disc 5 between the edge and some portion of the enclosed apparatus. In one example, Fig. 2, the resilient discs 5 bear on discs 9 of, e.g., " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Mark), one of which bears against an internal beading or series of projections 10 and the other against the edge of a ceramic cup 1. The discs 5 are of natural or synthetic rubber, e.g., neoprene, and have central bosses 6 to ensure efficient sealing of wire leads 3. The spun-over edge 8 makes an angle of about 45 with the axis of the tube to enhance the grip of the discs on the wires 3. The ceramic cup has internal and external metallic coatings, only the latter, 2, being visible in the drawing, and the wires 3 are soldered to the coatings, as at 4. In another example, Fig. 1 (not shown), the edges of the container are spun over at right-angles to grip the margin of the resilient discs against a ceramic dielectric plate. In a rolled condenser the wire lead may be formed into a spiral which forms a bearing surface for a resilient disc. The container is preferably made of aluminium in the case of electrolytic condensers, but is otherwise brass &c. which is advantageous when one end of the container is closed except for a small hole in which the wire lead is soldered. If a resilient disc is employed at each'end, one disc may be made conductive by incorporating in it a conductive powder as so to effect electrical connection between the wire and container. The container may be spun over at one end prior to the insertion of the apparatus. The discs may be coloured &c. to distinguish polarity in the case of electrolytic condensers &c.
