Abstract

447,118. Fluid -pressure brakes. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., GRESHAM, J. N., and MARSH, G. C., Ordsall Lane, Salford. Nov. 7, 1934, Nos. 31984/34 and 21258 /35. [Class 103 (i)] Fluid-pressure brakes particularly for railway vehicles, controlled in accordance with the speed of the vehicle comprises a valve i between the driver's valve m and the train pipe, which closes when a certain train pipe pressure has been attained, and is controlled by a pressure which is proportional to the speed of the vehicle, a spring j and train pipe pressure acting on a diaphragm k. The brake described is a vacuum brake. Another valve p is also provided which connects a vacuum reservoir q to the train pipe when the speed has been reduced, in order to reduce the power of the brake application progressively. A compressor a is driven from a wheel of the vehicle and charges a reservoir c, the pressure in which acts on a piston g on the stem h of the valve i. The reservoir c is provided with a leak d so that pressure does not commence to build up till a definite speed has been attained. When the brakes are applied, the valve i is closed when train pipe vacuum has decreased by a certain amount and the brakes are applied with only a part of the maximum force available unless the speed is high in which case the pressure developed in the reservoir c holds open the valve i until a greater braking force has been exerted. The valve p is also controlled by the pressure in the reservoir c, the train pipe pressure on a diaphragm a and a spring u. If the speed has been high, the reduction in train pipe vacuum causes a sufficient pressure above the diaphragm s to open the valve p when the pressure in the reservoir c falls when the train slows down, and connects the vacuum reservoir q to the train pipe in order to reduce the brake pressure as the speed falls. The train pipe is exhausted by means of a check valve v.
