Abstract

447,048. Reciprocating pumps. VEREINIGTE EISENBAHN - SIGNALWERKE GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Nov. 2, 1934, No. 31547. Convention date, Aug. 24. [Class 102 (i)] [See also Group XXXIV] Track brakes on permanent way operated by the weight of the vehicle are lifted into operative position by water pressure derived from a two stage pump, the low pressure stage is put out of action by a known suction valve releasing device operated by the brake operating fluid and the high pressure stage is put out of action by a pressure regulator when the brake pressure selected in reached. To operate the brake the brake hand lever 1 of the regulating valve is moved to the right to allow valves a, b to close whereupon, pumps N, H pump water into a pipe 5 leading to the brake apparatus and when the pressure in the pipe attains a certain value it acts on a piston 8 connected to the suction valve 10 of the low pressure pump N raising this valve and putting the pump out of operation. The pump H increases the pressure in the pipe 5 until a piston 12 is moved against a spring 14 and re-opens the valve b which allows pressure-fluid to pass from the pipe 5 by a pipe 16 to raise a piston 17 connected to the suction valve 18 of the pump H which is thereupon put out of action. To increase the pressure in the pipe 5 the lever 1 is moved further to the right to close the valve band open a valve c to release pressure from piston 17 and the pump H operates again until the pressure in the pipe 5 is sufficient to again move the piston 12. To reduce pressure the hand lever is retracted to open the valve a and the pressure fluid escapes until the valve a recloses by movement of the piston 12. In a modification the high pressure stage has no suction valve releasing means and is switched off by the regulator which byepasses its discharge back to the reserve liquid tank when the pressure in the brake pipe has attained a value corresponding to the position of the hand lever.
