Abstract

447,024. Rotary engines. HURST, J. H., and HURST, K. A., The Farm, Wortley, near Sheffield. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34281. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine or compressor comprises a central rotor 3, 3a, supported on vanes 5, which are secured to a shaft 4, and two rotary abutments 6, the lower one acting as an inlet valve for working fluid, when the device acts as an engine. The rotor is built up of tubes 3, 3a, clamped together by end discs 9, Fig. 6, having tapered flanges 10 which enter slots in the vanes 5. A nut 24 tightens up the assembly axially. The rotor is divided axially by a central partition, in addition to the compartments formed by the vanes. Working fluid enters a port 8a and expands against a vane 5, and also passes through one of the ports 14, through the rotor and expands in the chamber 1c. The chambers 1b, 1a, are meanwhile in communication with the exhaust port 15, gas from chamber 1b proceeding through compartments in the rotor. To secure reversal of the direction of motion, a valve 17a is moved to open a port 8 and close the port 8a, and the plate 18 is removed from a port 15a and used to block the port 15. Poppet valves may replace the plate 18.
