446,941. Compressing wood; making plywood. SAMSONOW, A. DE, 49, Avenue Leopold Wiener, Watermael, Brussels. Aug. 3, 1935, No. 22034. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1934. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] In the production of plywood or compressed laminated wood from wood veneers with the use of hardenable resins at high temperatures and with the use of moulds and presses not closed on all sides, during the compression or hot-pressing a small zone of completely compressed wood is produced at those edges of the compressed or ply sheets which are not enclosed by the press. In one example, as shown in the Figure, is a pile of air-dry veneers compressed in a box-press open at its ends, the fibres of the veneers all extending in the same direction, and the butt ends being directed to the open ends of the press ; strips P of wood are laid across the veneers above and below, their thickness being calculated in relation to the thickness of the pile and to the degree of compression which is to be effected. During compression, the end zones Q are completely compressed ; the effect of a closed press is thus obtained, preventing undue drying-out of the work.
