Abstract

745,651. Laminated materials. ELMENDORF, A. Feb. 9, 1953 [Aug. 16, 1952], No. 3535/53. Class 140. A veneered panel comprises a face veneer 2 bonded to at least one face of a particulate fibrous ligno-cellulose core 1 with the interposition between the veneer and the core of a cross-banding layer of tough paper 6. The core may comprise hammer-mill wood waste bonded with a binder such as a phenol or urea resin adhesive under heat and pressure. The tough paper cross-banding may be Kraft paper impregnated with thermosetting resins. Defects in the face veneer may be overcome as in Figs. 1 and 2. As shown in Fig. 1, a patch is applied below the defect 9 in the veneer and on pressing, part of the patch is forced upwards to plug the defect. In Fig. 2 the defect is sheared out at 15 and a patch 16 identical in size and shape is inserted. The face veneers may be applied as abutting strips, with or without taping on the undersides. A cornered structure may be formed by forming a cut 20 in the thickness of the panel terminating just clear of the paper layer 6. The face veneer is scored or cut at 22 and the panel bent into shape. Green veneers may be used. The panels may be made by the process described in Specification 745,652.
