Abstract

Permanent magnets are made by rapidly cooling from 1000-1350 DEG C. and reheating to 600-800 DEG C. alloys containing 5-20 per cent of aluminium, 5-45 of nickel and the balance iron with or without one or more added elements not adversely affecting the magnetic properties of the alloy to any material extent, in which alloys are incorporated up to 2 per cent of silicon or up to 5 per cent of titanium or both. The elements which may be added are cobalt up to 20 per cent, molybdenum up to 5, copper up to 15, manganese up to 5, tungsten up to 5 and vanadium up to 5, the total proportion of such elements not exceeding 30 per cent. In an example, alloys containing 32 per cent of nickel, 12 of aluminium and 0.5 of silicon was quenched from 1000 DEG C. and reheated to 750 DEG C. and another containing 32 of nickel, 12 of aluminium and 2 of titanium was similarly treated.
