Abstract

446,700. Joint - making packing. DICKSON, J. G., Glencoe, Illinois, U.S.A. Jan. 24, 1935, No. 2387. [Class 122 (iii)] A joint-making packing comprises three or more metal laminations rigidly secured together. The aligned openings for the cylinders and water are of different sizes, and the laminations are secured by turning up the bottom sheet 9 through the openings and securing it with upper flanges, or by metal grommets. A gasket for an internal-combustion engine has cylinder openings 12, water holes 24, and apertures 13 for studs and bolts. The lamination 23 has a larger opening 14 ; the other laminations are crowded together at 16 and secured by the holding means. The laminations are sometimes bevelled at the edges 10, 14 by the shearing cuts. The flange 17 or the grommets may be thicker than the laminations with the larger apertures 14. The laminations may be secured at spaced intervals by rivets, pins, or grommets, the laminations and the heads of the rivet or grommets being tapered at the places of contact.
