Abstract

474,424. Joint - making packing. WILLS, P., and WILLS, A. F. April 29, 1936, No. 12160. [Class 122 (iii)] A packing gasket particularly for the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine, comprises a layer 16 of asbestos or other soft packing associated with metal tubes 12 surrounding the openings to be packed and containing gas preferably at superatmospheric pressure. The tubes 12 are retained in position by bending over the edges of a metal sheet 14 on which the packing 16 rests. A metal sheet 15 may be placed above the packing 16 also. The tubes 12. may be circular in plan or of non-circular form, e.g. as shown. The gasket is formed with bolt holes 20 and water passages 18. Specifications 380,853 and 474,238 are referred to.
