437,012. Cylinders. JUNKERS. MOTORENBAU GES., 39, Junkersstrasse, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. April 8, 1935, No. 10848. Convention date, April 23, 1934. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXII] The joint 6 at the end of a thin liner 4, which is formed at the end as a smooth tube, is sealed by the pressure of elastic means, which pressure is limited to that necessary to produce an efficient seal. The elastic means may comprise long thin bolts 12, or a spring 15. The bolts are arranged in the water jacket so that the thermal expansion thereof may be substantially the same as that of the liner. In an opposedpiston engine, the same bolts press a pair of liners against packings located at the centre of the cylinder. A sliding joint 8 with the water jacket is arranged at the other end of the liner. Boring.-Prior to machining, the liners are mounted in a device corresponding to the cooling jacket and subjected to the same local pressure that they will have in the finished engine, by tightening the bolts 12 to the same amount, or by loading with the springs 15.
