[Class 103 (i)] An electromagnetic brake comprises two or more separate magnets mounted on a carrier 2, the magnets having inner and outer opposed poles 4, 3 respectively connected by a wound yoke, the pole faces being of considerably greater area than the cross-sectional area of the yoke and being arranged to provide an armature gap in the form of a narrowed extension of the coil space. The core 10 is integral with one pole and bolted or keyed to the other or it may be bolted or keyed to both. The armature 7 is cylindrical. In the modi.- fication, Fig. 10, the poles have co-operating stem-like parts 21, 22 secured by a nut 25. Magnets may be arranged on both sides of a disc to form a twin rotor brake or each magnet may be provided with two sets of pole faces as shown in Fig. 11 and attached to a tubular carrier 28. In a further modification, a single cylindrical armature is common to two separate sets of magnets mounted on carriers. The pole faces of the magnets may be staggered. The rotor may be provided with a fan having blades of aerofoil section or a fan. The poles of the magnets may alternate in polarity. The pole faces may be tapered.
