Abstract

In the preparation of cast iron, an iron melt having a silicon content of 1,25-2,0 per cent and a carbon content of 2-3 per cent is superheated in a reducing atmosphere to 2950-3500 DEG F. while being simultaneously mechanically agitated to effect an even disposition of carbon throughout the melt, the white iron formed, being cast, and the cast iron maintained at 1725-1775 DEG F. for 3-5 hours, cooled to 1400-1450 DEG F., quenched in oil, re-heated to 1325-1375 DEG F. and then air cooled. The melting, superheating and agitation of the iron may be carried out in an indirect electric are rocking type furnace and the temperature of the metal when being poured into moulds is 2750-2900 DEG F.
