[Class 27] Coin action with stationary coin forming abutment ; coin-discharging mechanism.-A coin inserted into a coin-freed apparatus passes into a chamber positioned so that a bent coin if forced therein is tested and frees the apparatus, the chamber having at least one wall free to move in order to accommodate a bent coin, the walls being subsequently further separated in order to discharge the coin. As applied to the meter prepayment mechanism described in Specification 445,546, in which a coin, inserted through a slot 37 in the casing, passes into a stationary pocket where its diameter is gauged by the head 17 of an axially slidable rod 11, the said pocket comprises spaced parallel plates 31, 32 having flared upper ends for receiving the coin. The plate 31 is fixed, whilst the plate 32 is pivoted at 33 and is urged inwardly by engagement of a pin 46 on the inturned end 41 of a spring actuated pivoted lever 42, its movement being limited by abutments 34 moving in short slots 35 in end plates 3 and 4. Normally, the two plates 31, 32 are separated sufficiently to accommodate an unbent coin. If a bent coin is forced in, the plate 32 yields slightly to receive it. As the setting shaft 1 is rotated, a cam 50 geared therewith operates, through a floating annular disc 49, a lug 47 on the lever 42 which is rotated to withdraw its inturned end 41 from beneath the coin pocket to release the coin. The lever 42 is connected by means of a spring 40 with the plate 32 so that, at the same time, the plate 32 is withdrawn as far as is permitted by the slots 35 to permit a free discharge of the coin. The switch is set by mechanism operated by a pin 8 on the shaft 1 as described in Specification 445,546 and is released when prepayment is exhausted as described in Specification 414,070.
