[Class 130] In cutting mechanism for cigarettemaking machines, a revolving knife carrier 34 and the gearing driving the same is supported by a housing 23 which is movably mounted on a stationary housing 22 supporting a reciprocating ledger plate 66 and its driving mechanism, and a shaft 44<c> actuated by a handwheel 44 is provided for adjusting the position of the carrier with respect to the ledger plate while the mechanism is in operation. The shaft 44<c>, Fig. 3, is carried by a plate 44<a> secured to a bracket 44<b> on the base 6 of the machine and is threaded to engage a lug 44d on the housing 23, rotation of the shaft effecting a raising or lowering of the housing 23 relative to the housing 22. As shown, a sliding oil-tight connection 26 is provided between the two housings 22, 23. The knife carrier 34 and ledger plate 66 are both actuated from a vertical shaft 12, the former by a shaft 75 through a gear 68 integral with a sleeve 39 normally loose on the shaft 12, gears 69, 73 on a shaft 70, and a gear 74 on the shaft 75, and the latter by a rod 60 which is reciprocated by the shaft 12 through a gear 49, integral with a sleeve 38 loose on the shaft 12 and in tongue-andgroove connection with the sleeve 39, a gear 50, shaft 51, eccentric 54 carrying a crank pin 55, link 56, and a slide secured to the said rod 60. A clutch 46, keyed to the shaft 12 and actuated by a handle 48, is provided for putting the gear sleeves 38, 39 into driving connection with the said shaft. The mechanism is lubricated by oil which is forced by a pump 98 from a well O and through pipes 103 ... 108 into the upper part 24 of the housing 23, from whence it flows down through a bearing 41 of the driving shaft 12 to the gears 68, 69 and then through a second bearing 40, 42 to the gears 49, 50, and finally back to the well O ; simultaneously oil passes through a duct 110 to a well O<1> in a lateral extension 28 of the housing 23 which contains the gears 73, 74, and from the well O<1> through a channel 111, duct 112 and pipe 113, to the crank 55 &c. of the ledger plate driving mechanism.
