Abstract

549,685. Hat-pouncing machines. HEIDE, H. C. (Doran Bros, Inc.). May 29, 1941. No. 6867 [Class 63] In a hat-pouncing machine of the kind described in Specifications 462,413 and 484,344, brim depressing mechanism flattens the brim of the hat against the hat block as the pouncing tool moves over the brim, hydraulic mechanism forces the tool against the hat during its travel thereover, a double-jointed connection is provided between the hat supporting column and the tool support so that this is maintained vertical while moving toward or away from and about the hat, and the pouncing tool comprises a' triangular casing with a roller in each corner about which a sand-paper belt is trained. A brim depresser 125, Fig. 7, is pivoted at 123 and urged by a spring towards the work. When the tool is operating on the upper part of the crown, a cam-actuated rod 119 lifts the depresser from the work. The tool is supported by a bracket 26, Fig. 6, this having ball-bearing engagement with an L-shaped conduit 33 carrying at its outer end a second L-shaped conduit 46 having ball-bearing engagement with the tool support-27. The members are hollow so that they may be used to withdraw the dust caused by the pouncing: The support carries three rollers 64, 65, 66, Fig. 1, over which is led a sand-paper strip 67, the lower roller being driven by an electric motor 59. The rollers and belt are enclosed by a triangular casing except for an open ing 71 whereby the dust is carried away. The conduit 33 is provided with a gear-wheel 35, Fig. 5, geared to a rack which moves the tool round the hat. An idle pinion 36 carries a pair of pins 137, 138 co-operating with a lever 133 pivoted to a lever 131 actuating a switch which cuts out the electric driving motors when the pinion moves clockwise at the end of the machine cycle. The pin 137 pulls the lever 133 endwise to actuate the switch and the pin 139 releases the lever to enable machine to be restarted. The L-shaped conduit 46 carries a gear segment 104, Fig. 2, gearing with a segment 106 carrying a stop 108 co-operating with an adjustable eccentric 109. The conduit 46 is urged toward the work by a cable 79 passing over pulleys 87, 86 and connected to the piston rod 77 of a cylinder 76 supplied with oil at a pressure determined by a cam 83 actuating a lever 85 connected to a pressure regulating valve. When the tool is operating on the side of the hat cable is carried up to and round an additional pulley 300. Specifications 528,406 and 546,491 also are referred to.
